The name is Valencian: fang, clay. Nothing more to it. It isn't a brand built from scratch, it's a word that names exactly what they do. Joana Segura opened the studio with all that knowledge behind her, more than twenty years working clay in Onda. When her daughter Marta came back to town, they turned it into a project for two.
Marta had taken a different road. Chile, Greece, Denmark. New countries, new studies. She was looking for something without quite knowing what. She says it herself on the studio's website: "I was convinced that finding myself was a matter of changing country." It wasn't in any of those places. It was here, with her mother, with the clay.
Hand-building, wheel and creative Saturdays
The studio runs regular classes during the week: hand-building on Tuesdays and Thursdays, wheel on Wednesdays. These aren't one-off sessions but ongoing courses, meant to teach you the process properly, not to send you home with a souvenir piece.
Saturdays work differently. There are themed workshops in a variety of formats: sometimes intensive, sometimes combined with something else (the Ceràmic&Brunch format is about making ceramics slowly and without rush). They also run workshops for groups, so if you want to bring friends it can be arranged.
"It's not the story I had planned. It's quite a bit better."
Marta Figás Segura, on returning to Onda and starting FANGHandmade ceramic jewellery
Alongside the studio's pieces, they have a line of ceramic jewellery called Les Joies de Fang: earrings and pendants made by hand from clay. This isn't jewellery with ceramic inlays but pieces designed as jewellery from the start, small and light, with the same handcrafted logic as the rest of the workshop's output.
They are sold in the studio shop and also through the website.
